CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If you have some old bones or rocks you keep, but can’t identify them, you’re in luck. Saturday is the 6th Annual ID Day at the Field Museum.
The Field Museum’s Bill Simpson said experts from 12 different areas will be available during the ID Day event that runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Simpson is head of geological collections and collections manager of fossil vertebrates.
"I think it was the first or second ID Day. I had several sets of dinosaur eggs brought in. That was a bit of a surprise," he said.
But, he said, you can still find fascinating natural things right here in the Chicago area. He said a mastodon jaw, now in the museum's possession, was found during the construction of the Stevenson Expressway.
"It had been found by one of the construction workers and he kept it under his porch for decades and then he passed away and his widow contacted one of his friends and said, ‘what should we do with this?’ and he encouraged her to donate it to the museum," he said.
Also, during the ID Day event, there’ll be a poster-making station for next week’s global Climate Strike demanding action on climate change.
