HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. — Highland Park will return fireworks and other Independence Day traditions this year, marking the first Fourth of July celebration with a fireworks display since the deadly parade shooting in 2022.

The city announced Thursday that festivities will begin on July 3 with the Park District’s Independence Fest at The Preserve of Highland Park, running from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The evening will feature live music, including ABBA tribute band Dancing Queen, a DJ, food trucks, and culminate with a fireworks show timed to a patriotic soundtrack in honor of America’s 250th anniversary.

“The two-day celebration is the product of close collaboration between the City and the Park District and reflects each organization’s commitment to working together to develop new traditions for the Independence Day holiday that will be sustainable for years to come,” the city said in a statement.

The Independence Day parade returns on July 4, stepping off at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Highland Park. This year’s parade has an America250 theme, encouraging floats that highlight both local history and broader American heritage. Participants can feature historical figures, Highland Park businesses or organizations, or special moments from past decades.

Additional activities include the Star-Spangled Pool Party at Hidden Creek AquaPark following the parade, with DJs, poolside games, and concessions. Parade participants receive free admission.

The city and Park District plan to release more event details closer to the holiday.
