Man Denies Being Driver In Police Chase, Trooper Finds Key Fob In His Underwear

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police said a Chicago man suspected of leading troopers on a high-speed chase in Northwest Indiana allegedly tried to hide evidence where he thought troopers would not find it - in his underwear. 

Indiana State Police said troopers saw an Audi A8 weaving and making unsafe lane changes on the Indiana Tollroad shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, but when they tried to pull over the motorist, the car allegedly sped off and at times reached 140 miles an hour. 

The car exited at Cline Avenue onto west bound Gary Avenue and continued through numerous intersections, stop signs and red lights into East Chicago, police said. The car then doubled back and drove south on Cline Avenue and exited at 5th Avenue. The pursuit continued east on 5th Avenue 

The troopers lost sight of the Audi in the area of Carroll Street and Truman Street, but minutes later found it abandoned.

Police said they saw two people walking from a nearby gas station and that they fit the description of the man and the woman who had been in the Audi. The pair denied having been in the car and reportedly said they had been in the gas station to buy snacks.

During further investigation, the male, later identified as 31-year-old Baylen J. Clark of Chicago, was in possession of marijuana and was impaired. After police placed Clark under arrest, they found the key fob to the Audi in his underwear. 

Police said that, when 31-year old Baylen Clark of Chicago was being arrested for marijuana possesion, they found the key fob to the Audi in his underwear. 

The female was not arrested.

Clark was charged with resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, reckless driving, poessession of marijuana, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, false informing, and driving while suspended, unsafe lane movement, and disregarding a traffic control device.
