Some Aurora residents are sad to see the loss of a very old tree that came down during the storms over the weekend.
The tree on the grounds of Herget Middle School was estimated to be between 350 and 400 years-old.
District 129 shared drone video of the tree from before and after the storm.
The burr oak standing tall and wide.
Surrounded by a white picket fence.
And then the tree is seen down on the grass.
The trunk snapped near the ground.
A social media post says, “this magnificent tree has long been a centerpiece of the campus—offering shade, shelter, and memories.”
People have been sharing theirs, expressing sadness and saying how much they loved the tree.
The tree was clearly weakened.
The trunk was rotten and partially hollow.
Plans are being made to re-purpose some of the tree.
The school says it will “honor its legacy.”
