CHICAGO — The smooth rhythms and improvisation that define jazz will take center stage in Chicago as the city hosts International Jazz Day, led by South Side native Herbie Hancock.

With deep roots in Chicago, the global celebration comes to the Windy City, in April, with Hancock at the helm. In a video message to Chicago, the Grammy-winning pianist and composer reflected on where his love for jazz began.

“It was at my high school, Hyde Park Academy, where I first discovered jazz,” Hancock said. “I was sitting in an auditorium watching a talent show, and then something clicked for me. Jazz opened doors for me.”

Hancock is bringing a roster of acclaimed artists to Chicago for the celebration, including Robert Glasper and Gregory Porter.

Education will also be a focus. Hancock is scheduled to host a special event for students at Hyde Park Academy, highlighting jazz as both an art form and a pathway for creative expression.

The celebration will culminate April 30 with a large jazz concert in Chicago that will be broadcast worldwide.
