How to Celebrate Passover While Social Distancing

By Eldis Sula, Audacy

With coronavirus restrictions instated all over the world, Passover will look a lot different this year.

But that doesn't mean that the Jewish holiday has to be any less meaningful or powerful while you and your family social distance.

More than ever, this year's Passover is an opportunity for people of the Jewish faith to connect and celebrate their faith together.

From virtual seders to food or meal alternatives you can substitute, here are a few tips on how to have an impactful Passover while your family social distances.

Host a virtual seder over video chat

There are an abundance of video chatting apps that make hosting a virtual seder possible. Using popular platforms like Skype or Zoom, you can bridge connections with people you're not able to celebrate with in person this year.

Substitute the Passover foods that you don't have for your seder plate

If you don't have easy access to traditional Passover foods, allow yourself substitution's where you need them given the unprecedented circumstances of this year's pandemic. The Rabbinical Assembly offers guidance on possible substitutions: "Ideally, there would be a seder plate at each location, but at the very minimum, every participating location should have access to wine or grape juice, three matzohs, karpas (any green vegetable), maror (any bitter vegetable, such as horseradish, endive, other bitter greens) and salt water."

Order your Passover meal online

You may want to consider ordering a Passover meal online if you don't have access to the ingredients you need. Check to see what restaurants are open amid stay-at-home orders in your city to make sure you have the holiday dinner covered.

Make your own Haggadah

Although everything may not be perfect this year, try to be equipped with whatever possible. Equip everyone with a haggadah — you can download and print one here and get one for the kids here.

Be flexible

Take it easy on yourself. While working around social distancing can be stressful, know that you will still have a unique Passover to remember, and this year's celebration will give you a memorable experience to reflect on for years to come. After all, those holiday planning jitters are normal, no matter how prepared you are.
