(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Two Northwest Side dining establishments have made the latest list of 50 restaurants The New York Times considers among the best in the United States.

It's the paper's third annual "Restaurant List" meant to highlight independent spots, half of which are new. After fanning out across the country, editors narrowed their focus to 50 eateries "that excite us most right now," the paper said.

New to the roundup is Daisies, an Italian bistro that opened in March in Chicago's Logan Square community and Thattu, a restaurant that offers home-style Indian cuisine in Avondale.

Thattu's chef, Margaret Pak, and owner Vinod Kalathil cannot believe the good news. They say they're both nervous and excited about the new exposure the restaurant will receive.

"We just need to keep our act together," Kalathil said Tuesday.

In a bio posted of executive chef and proprietor Joe Frillman on the Daisies website, the restaurant is described as "vegetable-focused and pasta-driven."

"Frillman works closely with his brother Tim Frillman of Frillman Farms to source sustainably and locally grown ingredients," the website says.
