2nd measles case reported in Chicago

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Department of Public Health has confirmed a second case of measles.

Hours after revealing they had detected the city’s first measles case since  2019, CPDH announced overnight that another case was identified in a young child who has been staying at a new arrivals migrant shelter in Pilsen, at 2241 S. Halsted.

The child has recovered and is no longer infectious, the department of public health said.

The agency is urging all shelter residents to stay in place until they can assess how many are vaccinated against measles. CPDH says vaccinated residents will be allowed to leave the shelter, while the unvaccinated will have to stay put.

The Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) will provide additional meals for migrants who cannot leave the shelter, and CPDH adds that they will supply additional masks for personal protective equipment for residents and staff.

This is not the first time there have been health concerns at the Pilsen shelter. Last December, Jean Carlos Martinez Rivero, a 5-year-old shelter resident, died after developing sepsis from a  Strep infection. Days later, at least four other residents were hospitalized with illness.

Thursday, the health department alerted the public of a measles case involving a person who may have exposed people at Swedish Hospital’s Galter Medical Pavilion and the CTA #92 Foster bus on Feb. 27. The patient, CPDH says, is recovering well at home.
