Three cases of Legionnaire's disease reported in central Illinois

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A cluster of Legionnaires’ disease cases is being investigated in central Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is working with the Shelby County Health Department and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to investigate all three cases of Legionnaire's which were reported in Findlay, Illinois, which is about 200 miles south of Chicago.

The reported illness onset dates were all between July 30-August 4 and health officials are trying to determine common exposures between the cases. The EPA is also testing the water.

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious lung infection that people can get by breathing in small droplets of water containing Legionella bacteria.

There have been 215 confirmed cases in Illinois so far this year. There were 381 last year.
