CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Four South Side residents have been hospitalized with carbon monoxide poisoning after they were rescued by firefighters in their home Thursday night.
The Chicago Fire Department said crews responded to the two-flat, single family North Lawndale home, at 18th and St. Louis a little after 6 p.m. for suspicion of high carbon monoxide. Six people were found inside the home, including an 80-year-old woman who was unconscious. Four residents were transported to the hospital, a CFD official said. Two were sent to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, one was transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, and the fourth person went to Saint Anthony Hospital in fair condition. Two other residents refused medical attention.
The CFD said fighters detected carbon monoxide levels of 500 PPM (parts-per million), which is considered a dangerous level. There no working carbon monoxide detectors found inside the home, a CFD spokesman noted.
Firefighters believed a faulty furnace caused the leak. The CFD reminds residents to check their heating systems and to have working CO detectors in their home.
