7 seriously hurt in South Chicago mass shooting

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- At least seven people were seriously wounded in a mass shooting Sunday afternoon in South Chicago.

The shooting happened about 3:30 p.m. in the 7900 block of South Exchange Avenue, according to Chicago fire officials.

Seven people were transported to hospitals in serious to critical condition, fire officials said.

Police surrounded a shopping center housing a Little Caesars, sandwich shop and a phone store. A portion of a residential area of Exchange Avenue was also closed off by police.

Two small children watched police process the scene from a window in an apartment building off of 79th Street. Officers placed evidence markers on the roadway of 79th Street.

About a handful of nearby residents gathered as they tried to figure out what happened.

Chicago police have not yet released information on the shooting.
