CRYSTAL LAKE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Eight residents at a Crystal Lake apartment complex have been displaced following a Sunday afternoon fire in one of the building’s units.
The Crystal Lake Fire Department said crews were called to the Skyridge Club Apartments, located just east of Randall and south of Ackman, just before 12:30 p.m. There, firefighters saw smoke and flames coming from a second floor apartment of the eight unit, two-story building.
The unit’s residents were not home when the fire started, the fire department noted. Occupants of the seven other units evacuated safely, with one person treated and released at the scene with smoke inhalation.
It took crews about a half hour to control the fire.
Crews declared the unit in which the fire originated a total loss, while the three nearby apartments are uninhabitable and will need repairs after suffering smoke and water damage.
The building’s four other units were spared from damage, according to a fire official, because of it being built with a fire separation wall.
Firefighters discovered that the building did not have a fire sprinkler system or monitored fire alarm system, but each unit did possess smoke detectors.
The fire department estimated the building suffered roughly $200,000 in damages.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents find temporary shelter.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
