Following multiple revisions and discussions, Aurora City Council members passed an ethics ordinance that enacts a $1,500 cap on campaign donations from businesses with city contracts.
The ordinance was introduced originally by Aurora Mayor John Laeschin in October.
The measure builds off of the city's 2019 ordinance, "enhancing ethics safeguards around local elected officials," according to a city press release.
The city continues "key reforms include more thorough disclosures of economic interests and campaign finances, campaign contribution limits and regulation, and the regulation of lobbyist donations to City officers, candidates, or committees."
Speaking during public comment in the meeting, resident Mike Johnson questions the hours spent on the ordinance, "When you look at what people are really concerned about, it's the overcrowding, it's our neighborhoods, it's our schools, it's the basic maintenance of the city."
A decision to not follow the ethics rules could result in the disqualification of doing business with the City of Aurora for a four-year period.
