The exchange of gunfire happening on Interstate 80/94 near the Indianapolis Boulevard exit, just east of the state line around midnight.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield says the incident started with an Indiana State Trooper performing a routine traffic stop, "the trooper requested additional units to immediately respond to his traffic stop location as he had two occupants of the vehicle at gunpoint.
He continues, "officers from the Hammond and Lake County Sheriff's Department both initially responded and were first to arrive at the scene."
Fifield says the 34 year-old driver allegedly took out a handgun and fired at the four officers, "the suspect was shot and died at the scene. Our trooper sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and an officer with the Hammond Police Department transported him to Munster Community Hospital for treatment. He was transferred from there to the University of Chicago hospital for surgery and he is in stable condition."
The Sergeant says 34-year-old woman also from Gary, Indiana was taken into custody and is currently being held as the investigation continues. No other officers were injured.
