The city of Chicago is collecting submissions for its fourth annual “You Name a Snowplow” contest.
People are encouraged to submit their best snow-related puns by Jan. 10 at Chicagoshovels.org.
Six winning names will be attached to plows in each of the city’s six snow districts, according to the Department of Streets and Sanitation, which is running the contest.
The submission “ABOLISH ICE” has garnered attention, including from Mayor Brandon Johnson, who quote posted an account that suggested the name on X.
MS Now host Rachel Maddow mentioned the snowplow contest on a recent show.
The winning submissions will join past victors, including “Sears Plower,” “Snower Wacker” and “Bean There, Plowed That.”
The first phase of the contest will end after 20,000 submissions or on Jan. 10, whichever comes first. The city then picks 25 finalists, which residents can vote on from Feb. 1-14.
Each participant is limited to one submission of up to 50 characters. People can vote for six finalists.
“The snowplow-naming contest is a crowd favorite, and we are as excited as ever to see the creativity and Chicago pride on display with this year’s submissions,” said Cole Stallard, commissioner of the department. “This is a great opportunity to engage with the community and showcase the hard work of the city staff in clearing snow and ice from the roads.”
Residents who submit winning names will be able to take a photo with the snowplow they helped name, officials said.
