Advocate South Suburban Hospital opening new $20M behavioral health unit

HAZEL CREST (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Advocate South Suburban Hospital is making a significant step in mental health care offerings.

Tuesday, Advocate Health Care will open a new behavioral health unit at the Hazel Crest hospital. With input from several psychiatrists, nurses, therapists and Advocate Health leadership team members, the unit features 27 beds, private rooms for patients, recreational spaces and a fitness center. The $20 million project is expected to provide inpatient services to 800 patients each year.

Advocate Medical Director of Behavioral Sciences Dr. David Kemp told the Daily Southtown that people with mental health issues might find themselves in a hospital emergency room, waiting hours or even days before being admitted. Kemp said he hopes for some relief with the new unit.

Apart from inpatient services, Advocate expects an additional 5,000 patients could receive care each year through partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient mental health services.
