(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly has an idea to help the city crack down on bars and taverns that are frequent trouble spots.
The 42nd Ward alderman said more inspectors and enforcement officers should work the night shift – most work days -- to crack down on the relative few nuisance establishments.
“There’s so much violating going on because folks know we’re spread thin,” Reilly said Tuesday at a budget hearing for the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection.
Reilly suggests the department could incentivize later shifts by offering more money or flexibility to workers.
He said it shouldn't have taken a mass shooting at a River North bar for the city to finally shut down that problem establishment.
Budget Committee Chair Jason Ervin said Reilly’s idea is worth examining. He said he’d consult with the city’s Law Department.
