CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A group of aldermen is demanding the Lightfoot Administration lift its mask and vaccine mandate Friday so residents and businesses can celebrate Valentine’s Day and the Super Bowl without them.

In a letter to Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady, 11 aldermen cited data from her department showing declines in new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

Aldermen Ray Lopez posted the letter on Twitter that says vaccine and mask requirements have helped prevent variants from overtaking our city, but the science now says it’s time to loosen the regulations that have crippled virus and business alike.

The group of aldermen, which includes Ray Lopez, Anthony Beale, Ed Burke, Matt O'Shea, and Silvana Tabares, said COVID numbers are about where they were when Chicago hosted Lollapalooza. They added that the mandates have crushed restaurants and bars and lifting them would allow people to enjoy Valentine's Day and the Super Bowl while deciding to how protect themselves.

A health department spokesman said the city can’t repeal its mask mandate before the state does.
