(WBBM NEWSRADIO) --A north side Alderwoman is proposing changes to heating and cooling requirements of building owners after three elderly women died in a hot apartment building in Rogers Park.

Alderwoman Maria Hadden said management of the building failed to switch over from the heating system to the cooling system leading to the women’s deaths.

"This shouldn't have happened-could have been prevented."

She now wants to reduce the trigger temperature for air conditioning to be turned on from 100 degrees to 84 degrees or when the heat index hits 80 degrees.

"Maybe we need to change some ordinances if common sense isn't prevailing in building management companies who seem more interested in saving a buck when they should have turned on that air conditioning."

Hadden also wants to make changes concerning heating requirements.
