(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A suburban rescue shelter has jumped in to save a group of dogs from a hoarding situation in Chicago.

Fifteen medium to large dogs were discovered at a residence, but Chicago’s Animal Care and Control was at capacity. So, it reached out to Northbrook non-profit Border Tails Rescue.

It’s hoping to nurse the dogs back to health and get them adopted.

“Taking on 15 dogs is definitely no small undertaking,” said Harleigh Garcia, founder and executive director of Border Tails Rescue. “We’re the professionals, and so we need to work with them and spend time getting them acclimated to the regular world, and how to be a normal dog, or at least how to start before going into a home environment.”

Some of the dogs were suffering from blindness, matting, overgrown nails, hair loss and open wounds.

Border Tails Rescue is looking for donations and foster families to assist the dogs in overcoming shyness and nervousness.
