(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Sixty employees at the Art Institute of Chicago have sent management a letter saying they wish to unionize, according to AFSCME, which already represents employees at the Chicago Public Library and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield.
Anna Feuer, who works in the Art Institute’s Ryerson Library, said employees have have long told upper management they need more staff and better wages — to no avail.
AIC hired the Gallup organization to survey staffers some years ago, she said, when these opinions about staffing and wages were shared. But nothing really changed, Feuer said.
She said she has no problem with her immediate supervisors, who are frustrated, too.
Feuer also noted employees love working at the Art Institute of Chicago.
They are collecting signatures and organizing among the 330 eligible employees. Feuer hopes things will go amicably.
The Art Institute of Chicago released a statement to WBBM Newsradio, which reads, in part: "Our preference is to continue to work with and treat our staff as the unique individuals they are and address their concerns directly, without the presence of a union."
