(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After a woman was attacked and seriously hurt by a man along a Cook County Forest Preserves trail near Niles last week, police are asking the public for help in tracking down the suspect.

Investigators said it happened on the afternoon of May 12. The woman was walking along the North Branch Trail in the Bunker Hill Forest Preserve between Touhy Avenue and Howard Street.

Martin Hasler is the first deputy chief of the Cook County Forest Preserve Police.

“She was approached from behind by a man on a bicycle who struck her several times in the head with a blunt object, causing serious injury,” Hasler said. “The victim was then taken to the hospital for treatment.”

Police have increased patrols along and near the North Branch Trail following last week's attack.

Authorities have released a sketch of the man they're looking for.

Anyone with information about the attack or the individual in the sketch was encouraged to call the Forest Preserves Police at 708-771-1001.
