(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Illinois residents who owned guns the state has labeled “assault weapons” before a sales ban took effect can now register them so that they can legally keep them.

After the state supreme court’s decision in August to uphold the ban, Illinois State Police are now accepting endorsement affidavits for so-called assault weapons and their attachments, as well as .50 caliber rifles and cartridges.

A tutorial on the state police website explains how gunowners can register them online, beginning Oct. 1, using their Firearm Owners Identification card account.

Owners of the grandfathered weapons must register them before Jan. 1 or face penalties.

The new Illinois law was approved following the deadly attack at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park.
