CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- West suburban Aurora remembered the lives lost on September 11, 2001. This year's remembrance of a past crisis was colored by the reality of the crisis of COVID-19.

City officials remembered the lives lost on this day 19 years ago.  They also commemorated the men and women who were either killed or wounded in military actions that have taken place since then, including the ongoing war in Afghanistan.

In a socially distant indoor ceremony that was broadcast on Facebook Live, Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin recalled the sense of unity and resolve that developed in the days after 9/11.  He added that same sense of resolve can get people through the crises of 2020.

"I hope we can dig deep within to break out the resilience, dedication, and fortitude and use them to fight the pandemic of COVID-19 and its side effects and the epidemic of systematic racism and racial unrest that have sadly defined this year," Irvin said.

He said it was essential to remember 9/11.

"Let us remember so that we do not forget.  Let us not forget so that we do not repeat.  Let us not repeat so that we rightfully honor the fallen and remain strong.  America strong, and Aurora strong," Irvin said.
