The city of Aurora has held a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for Latinx residents to address what some officials say has been an inequity in distribution.
Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin on Friday said numbers from Kane County show that fewer than 12% of the vaccines administered there have gone to the Latinx community. The percentage in DuPage County is worse: — just over 5%.
So, the state’s second-largest city mounted its Latin-Vax event at the La Sierra Banquets facility. It was fully booked, to the delight of Aurora state Rep. Barbara Hernandez.
She said people in her community should not wait to get the vaccine.
The city previously held a Black Vax event for African Americans and plans one for people with disabilities next week.
Aurora Ald. Emmanuel Llamas says the Latinx event is a good start, but there are still many more who need to be vaccinated. There are many who are hesitant to take the vaccine, he notes.
