Unvaccinated city workers in Aurora to undergo weekly COVID testing starting Monday

Vaccine deadline written on a calendar

AURORA, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Employees of another area municipality face a COVID deadline Monday - the day for unvaccinated city employees in Aurora will start undergoing weekly COVID-19 testing.

The City of Aurora is one of the many municipalities across the Chicago area requiring city employees to get vaccinated or undergo weekly testing.

Under the city policy, any employee who is not fully vaccinated by Oct. 22 will be required to complete a COVID-19 PCR test and report the results to the city every Monday starting Oct. 25. Testing must be done outside of an employee's work hours.

The policy applies to most city employees, interns, contractors, and the fire department. It is negotiating a similar policy with the unions that represent city workers.

In a news release, the city said the majority of employees are in compliance with the policy. Those who don't get the vaccine or submit proof of testing won't be allowed to work in city buildings or drive city vehicles.

A city spokesperson said the mandate is necessary, because of the number of interactions between city employees and the public.
