(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Authorities in DuPage County have filed murder charges against a 30-year-old Minnesota resident accused of beating a man at a Villa Park train station last year and inflicting injuries that caused his subsequent death.
Earlier this month, Gregory Matthews of St. Paul drew the attention of police in Minnesota for a disturbance at a train station there. Matthews is believed to be the person who attacked 62-year-old James Kelly at the Villa Park train station on Ardmore Avenue on July 10, 2022.
Police responding to the station last year say they found Kelly unconscious on the ground and bleeding from the head. Kelly died on Dec. 3, 2022 from complications of blunt-force injuries, authorities said.
Kelly was alone on the train station platform in Villa Park when he was approached by Matthews, officials said. Matthews allegedly punched Kelly, causing him to fall to the ground and stole the victim’s cell phone before fleeing.
Matthews was extradited last weekend to DuPage County, where he is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of robbery of a person 60 years or older, prosecutors announced. A judge on Thursday denied Matthews bond.
“Mr. Kelly did not deserve to be a victim of senseless violence. As a society, we must work together, stronger more than ever, to fight against the scourge of violent criminals who think nothing to attack an innocent person,” Villa Park Police Chief Michael Rivas said in a news release.
Matthews is next due in court on Aug. 11.
