(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Interest in an after-school club at Naperville North High School is booming at a time when many classes are conducted remotely.

The auto club has grown to at least 30 members this year, meeting at the school four days a week.

Greg Ditch is the sponsor of the club, which attracted some students who are eager to come to the building.

“They were looking to get some hands-on experience, and they wanted to get out of the house. And they wanted to do things and try new things,” he said Thursday.

To keep students safe from COVID, Ditch has split the club into small groups that come alternate days to work on different components of a 1995 Mustang GT they’re rebuilding with their own tool kits.

The goal is to have it ready for AutoRama this spring.

Thanks to partnerships with racing groups, Ditch has arranged several virtual talks with industry people to tell the kids about possible careers.

Naperville North is currently scheduled to resume hybrid learning Jan. 25.
