CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --September is “Baby Safety Month” and the Consumer Product Safety Commission is offering some reminders to parents and caregivers.
COVID-19 has placed new pressure on parents and sometimes things that have been suggested for a long time, may be forgotten. But Nychelle Fleming with the Consumer Product Safety Commission said it can mean the difference between life and death for a baby.
"It's so important to always place your baby to sleep, always place the baby on its back. And you want to use a safe sleep environment - that could be a crib, a bassinet, or a play yard that meets federal standards. So you are looking for a newer crib that meets federal standards," she said.
Putting a baby to sleep on his/her back reduces SIDS.
And Fleming said adding bedding to the sleep space can cause even more danger. She said whatever you do, "stop using recalled incline sleepers. In the past couple of years we have recalled millions of incline sleepers and we are urging consumers to take advantage of the remedies being offered to stop using those. There have been infant deaths with incline sleepers."
She also reminds parents to check if any nursery products have been recalled by logging onto cpsc.gov/recalls.
Also, the commission said never transfer household cleaning products and laundry packets to a different bottle without a child resistant closure and label – and put the Poison Control Center Hotline in your cell phone. The number is 800-222-1222.
