(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Areas of Batavia have been defaced with graffiti over the past month including the Batavia Bike Path, businesses along Shumway Avenue and several city utility boxes.

The Kane County Forest Preserve has also received recent reports of defacement.

“We've had several different styles of graffiti,” Detective Sgt. Gary La Barbera said. “There's some that are spray paint and there's some that are either sharpie or paint marker.”

Different stylings suggest more than one suspect, although La Barbera tells WBBM Newsradio it doesn’t appear to be gang-related.

In an effort to catch whoever is responsible, Batavia Police are now increasing foot patrols and sifting through surveillance video.

La Barbera says these types of cases are not easy to solve, noting most of the vandalism happens overnight.

“We do ask the public to keep an eye out if they see any type of suspicious activity,” he said. “We had a similar case years ago that was actually solved by just good old-fashioned police work of a police officer being in the area and making contact with an individual and it turns out that they had spray paint on them.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Batavia Police at 630-454-2500.
