BBB: 'Recovery' scams prey on hope

Being scammed is painful, but recovery scams are double trouble. Jay Elliott with the Better Business Bureau's Tip-Off to the Rip-Off® on WBBM Newsradio has the details.

Nobody wants to lose their hard-earned money to a scammer. It's even worse when the same fraudsters contact you again, pretending to be someone who can help you get it back.

To gain your trust, these con artists create fake company websites and reviews, claiming they can recover your lost money if you pay an upfront fee. Some pose as government officials, lawyers, or technical experts to sound more convincing.

Be especially wary if they say "act now before the window closes" or promise a "100% recovery rate," as those are common red flags.

Always be cautious and never send money to people or businesses you don't know.
