The badge or photo might look official, but the risk of a scam is very real. Jay Elliott with the Better Business Bureau’s Tip-Off to the Rip-Off® on WBBM Newsradio has the details.
You might get a call, text, or email from someone claiming to represent a government agency or bank, warning you about a problem with your account.
To appear legitimate, they may even send a photo with a badge or official-looking credentials.
Sometimes scammers even use the names of real employees or agencies to build trust.
They will likely try to pressure you to act immediately, saying your account or money is at risk.
No government or bank official will ever ask you to move money, especially urgently or temporarily for safekeeping. That’s a big red flag.
Never use contact information they provide and always verify who you’re dealing with.
