(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Bears on Friday recognized Matt Purdy of Glenbrook North in Northbrook as its Coach of the Week.

“I’m very excited to be recognized as Coach of the Week, excited that I've been able to represent our kids through a very difficult time and all the lives in our community,” said Purdy, who is currently in his second year as head coach.

It’s been a challenging year for the Spartans, partly because of COVID-related restrictions that kept the team from practicing in-person at the start of the season.

The team took another hit with the passing of their quarterback, Dylan Buckner. The 18-year-old died by suicide in January after battling depression.

Purdy called on parents and students to come together and support one another after the loss of "an amazing leader, friend, dedicated student and athlete."

“Occasionally there’s a tear at practice, and we stop and recognize that and we grow from it,” Purdy said.

Under his leadership, the team played their first game of the season last Friday against Evanston Township. Although they fell 48-6, Purdy tweeted a signed photo given to him by the Evanston team and said football is more than what happens on the field.

The Chicago Bears’ Coach of the Week program was launched in 1996, and the High School All-Star program in 2011.

In addition to honoring Purdy, the Bears will also make a $2,000 donation to the Glenbrook North football program.
