CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The City of Chicago next week plans to clear and permanently close a homeless tent camp ahead of the Democratic National Convention.
This is a very visible tent camp along the Dan Ryan Expressway north of Roosevelt Road. It sits along a route that people here for the convention would take to get from McCormick Place to the United Center.
While there has been no request from Homeland Security to clear the camp, the City’s Department of Families and Support Services told the Chicago Sun-Times that could happen.
The camp has been threatened before. This time the City says it's permanent.
There are roughly two dozen people living there. The City says they’re being moved to a shelter in the former Tremont Hotel on Chestnut Street west of Michigan Avenue, at least temporarily.
