WASHINGTON D.C. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- President Joe Biden pointed to Belvidere in northern Illinois Thursday night as a union jobs success story in his State of the Union address.

He visited back in November to celebrate the decision by Stellantis to reopen its idled assembly plant and bring back over 1,000 jobs following a strike, which he referred to as "a great comeback story".

The president addressed residents from Belvidere last night.

"Instead of your town being left behind, your community is moving forward again, because of instead of watching auto jobs in the future go overseas, 4,000 union jobs with higher wages are building the future in Belvidere right here in America."

Biden invited UAW President Shawn Fain and several union members to sit with the first lady during his election year speech, including UAW worker Dawn Simms from Davis Junction, which is just outside of Belvidere.

"Today Dawn has a good job in her hometown, providing stability for her family and pride and dignity as well," Biden added.
