(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Illinois Attorney General’s Office announced a west suburban man is going to prison for scamming people into thinking he could help them get state jobs if they gave him money.
He is 49-year-old Hugo Torres, of Berwyn, and he has been sentenced to seven years in prison for theft by deception.
The Illinois Attorney General’s Office said Torres scammed at least four people.
He posed as a supervisor for the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office and promised that, in exchange for $400 dollars cash, he’d get them a job exam.
In some cases he also falsely claimed he could help people get driver’s licenses and resolve traffic tickets.
This wasn’t Torres’ first time pulling the scam. He had been previously convicted of a similar fraud — and has never worked for the secretary of state’s office.
