CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Carrying a gun illegally resulted in a six year prison sentence for a Chicago area man, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

Back in 1993, Darnell Luckett, 51 of Berwyn was convicted of kidnapping and murder meaning he could not possess a weapon. In 2017, Luckett was stopped by police in Maywood who discovered a hand gun, ammunition and drugs in his car.

He pleaded guilty earlier this year and this week was sentenced to 71 months in prison.

“The city of Chicago is plagued by gun violence,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew J. Dixon argued in the government’s sentencing memorandum.

“Federal gun laws exist to prevent individuals from being armed who have shown they cannot be trusted to responsibly possess a firearm.”
