A 13-year-old bicyclist was fatally struck by a semi-truck Monday afternoon in southwest suburban Manhattan.

Police and fire officials responded to the intersection of State and East North around 5:35 p.m. and found the boy unresponsive underneath the truck, Manhattan police said.

The Will County Sheriff’s Police, Will County Coroner’s Office, Illinois State Police and Manhattan Emergency Services were also called to the scene, officials said.

An investigation was ongoing.

In a note to residents Tuesday morning, Manhattan Mayor Mike Adrieansen “expressed my deepest condolences for the tragic loss.”

Adrieansen noted village officials were taking steps to improve safety on Route 52 including meeting with the llinois Department of Transportation, adding crosswalks to the downtown area and implementing a dedicated truck enforcement program among other improvement efforts.

“As a parent, neighbor, and Mayor of this Village, I share in your grief, your anger, and your urgent desire for change, Adrieansen wrote. “No words can ease the pain of losing a child, and no action can undo what has happened, I wish it could.”
