Biden reveals choice for new Chicago federal district court judge

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — President Joe Biden announced that he is set to nominate six people to become federal district court judges — including one here in Chicago.

The White House said the president's choice to join the Northern District of Illinois is Judge Sunil R. Harjani. Harjani currently serves as a magistrate judge for the district and took his oath of office in 2019.

He is also an adjunct professor at Northwestern Law School, where he teaches White Collar Criminal Practice and Federal Civil Discovery Courses.

In a statement, Illinois Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth said they looked forward to supporting Harjani’s nomination in the U.S. Senate.

“Judge Harjani was highly regarded by our screening committee and brings strong qualifications and a wealth of courtroom experience … that will strengthen our federal bench,” read the senators’ statement.

Harjani previously served as an assistant U.S. Attorney and as deputy chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Section in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois from 2008 – 2019.

Once Biden submits his nominations to the Senate, it will be reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee, which Durbin chairs. If approved by the committee, each nominee will receive a vote by the full Senate.
