(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Some residents of far west suburban Big Rock are gathering petition signatures to prevent a slaughterhouse and meat processing plant from being built in their village.
Big Rock is a village of 1,100 people and is located in Kane County, about 15 miles west of downtown Aurora.
Danyell Dagostino is among the Concerned Residents of Big Rock leading the fight against the proposed meat processing plant.
She says it would be built near Hinckley-Big Rock Middle School and could result in higher taxes because of the impact more trucks would have on roads in town. Water pollution is also a concern, she said.
"Many people are on wells, so the concern of what would happen if the on-site septic system were to fail,” she said.
Concerned Residents of Big Rock have gathered more than 1,100 petition signatures on Change.org.
The Big Rock Planning and Zoning Committee had planned a meeting Monday, but it was canceled with no new date set, Dagostino said.
Dagostino, who lives across the road from the property, said locals aren’t against having a new business at the site.
"I just don’t think this is the right business and the right type of jobs that would benefit Big Rock,” she said.
Attempts were unsuccessful to reach Big Rock officials.
