(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth introduced a law that will make it easier for those with disabilities to use Amtrak stations.

The bipartisan Think Differently Transportation Act backed by Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, would require Amtrak to submit annual reports to Congress on its compliance with accessibility standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Duckworth said in a statement that the bill sends the message that it is long past time to ensure that our rail stations are accessible to everyone.

As of July of 2023, Amtrak has only made 30% of its 385 stations accessible to those with disabilities.

Yet the rail system has received $275 million from 2017 to 2021 in federal funding to make upgrades.

The bill heads to the president's desk to sign.
