IU Health to conduct external review following Black doctor claiming mistreatment based on race dies of COVID-19

INDIANAPOLIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The head of Indiana University Health said there will be an external review after a patient, a black physician, claimed she was mistreated because of her race in a video she posted on Facebook before her death.

Dr. Susan Moore had tested positive for Covid-19 and she spoke for about 7 minutes from her hospital bed, detailing her care, or lack thereof, in her opinion, at IU Health North.

"They wanted to send me home. At that time, I had received two treatments of the remdesivir. He said, 'Ah, you don't need it. You're not even short of breath.' I said, 'Yes, I am.' And then he went on to say, 'You don't qualify. You should just go home right now,'" Moore said in her Facebook video.

Moore said she was in excruciating pain, but was initially denied pain medication.

"He made me feel like I was a drug addict. I'm a physician. I don't take narcotics." Moore said of her doctor at IU Health North.

Moore concluded she received such treatment based on her race.

"If I was white, I wouldn't have to go through that," Moore said.

Moore was discharged after eight days and was in another hospital within 12 hours.

Her death, according to her son, was caused by pneumonia.

In a statement, Dennis Murphy, IU Health President and CEO, stood by the care Moore received but said he's concerned that they may not have shown compassion and respect.  Murphy said an external review would be conducted.
