Thousands of registered Chicago voters will find themselves without a regular polling place for the 2022 Illinois primary election.
A court has given the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners permission to leave 73 election precincts without a polling place for June 28.
The ward with the highest number of closed polling places is the 42nd Ward, which includes parts of the downtown, River North, and Streeterville. It will lose 14 polling venues.
The 44th Ward will have eight polling places closed, and the 40th, 43rd, and 45th Wards will each lose six polling locations.
The board said that property owners who previously hosted polling locations decided not to participate again due to lingering challenges from the pandemic.
Election board spokesman Max Bever says the decision affects more than 59,000 voters.
Affected voters will receive notification via mail that their choices now include: voting on Election Day at their ward’s early voting site or voting by mail.
