(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 12-year-old boy accused of threatening to attack his Wheaton middle school has gone before a judge.

On Tuesday, investigators say, the boy asked his teacher at Edison Middle School if anyone had blown up the school before — and then allegedly said he would be the first to do it.

Prosecutors say the boy then asked the teacher if there were police at the school before rocking his chair and saying, “Shots fired” every time the chair hit the floor. The teacher reported the incident to school administrators, who contacted Wheaton police.

At a court hearing Thursday, a judge released the student to his mother. He is charged with one count of disorderly conduct. The boy’s next hearing is June 23.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said students need to understand that threats to school safety “are no joking matter.”

“Every threat involving a juvenile must be fully investigated by law enforcement and where appropriate, will turned be over to authorities in the juvenile justice system,” he said in a news release.
