CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An eighth grader from Chicago's Clearing neighborhood graduated from his CPS school Monday without missing a single day since preschool.
Jeffrey Yersich proudly shared that his grandson Aiden McNulty is the first student at Dore Elementary to have such a perfect attendance record according to the principal.
McNulty said after five years of perfect attendance, there was no point in stopping. sheepishly told WBBM it was in large part due to staying healthy.
"I was never really severely sick. I had never broken my arm or anything…nothing really severe where I shouldn't have gone to school," McNulty said.
The 14-year-old said he was able to stay healthy over the years, and, during the height of the pandemic, his South Side school would send home an entire classroom for ten days of remote learning if someone had COVID.
The 14-year-old could get his persistence from Yersich, who recalled very few sick days while working as a commercial roofer.
"We'd miss a lot of winter, we'd miss rain days, so there was no sense in missing more days," Yersich recalled.
