(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An employee of a south suburban construction company has been charged in a scheme federal prosecutors say had him paying bribes to a worker in the Cook County Assessor’s office in exchange for lower property taxes.
A federal grand jury charged John Bodendorfer with bribery and wire fraud after the 55-year-old employee of Oak Construction in Summit allegedly gave jewelry, tickets to sporting events and free home improvement projects to a staffer in the assessor’s office.
Federal prosecutors say the staffer then lowered the assessments on some properties. That man pleaded guilty last year. Bodendorfer’s boss, who was also charged in the three-year scheme has pleaded not guilty and so has former Alderwoman Carrie Austin and one of her former aides to charges of accepting home improvement jobs from a real estate developer.
