(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Brookfield couple will be the first to receive a marriage license in Cook County in the new year.
Clerk Karen Yarbrough livestreamed the drawing Tuesday morning as she picked a piece of paper out of a clear bowl.
The winners: 42-year-old Mandy Fila and 47-year-old Daniel Ferguson. They will be married by Yarbrough in the clerk’s vital records office on Jan.
3.
While the tradition goes back years, this is a return to in-person officiating since COVID.
Last year, the clerk married the first couple over Zoom.
Fila tells WBBM Newsradio she’s never won anything and was shocked they were picked from the more than 100 couples who entered the lottery.
She says she and Daniel have been planning on getting married for some time and they will bring their two kids with them to the ceremony.
The happy couple will receive donated gifts of food, wine, flowers and more from local businesses.
