(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Democrats in Lake County must pick a state senator to serve for nine days, due to Sen. Melinda Bush’s early departure from the Illinois Senate.
Although state senator-elect Mary Edly-Allen won Bush’s seat in November, she did so under Illinois’ new electoral map. Bush’s immediate replacement, though, must be a Lake County resident under the current Illinois map, which Edly-Allen is not.
Lake County Democratic leaders plan to meet on Monday to serve in the seat until Edly-Allen is sworn in with the rest of the 103rd General Assembly on Jan. 11.
The legislature has five session days scheduled prior to the swearing in of new members.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, and they must have lived in the old district for the last two years.
Bush, who did not run for re-election, did not disclose why she is stepping down early.
