BUFFALO GROVE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Six more suburbs approved rules Tuesday night aimed at preventing buses of migrants from stopping in their communities unannounced.
The Buffalo Grove Village Board voted unanimously to require bus companies give a detailed plan at least five days in advance of how riders would be cared for or face fines of $300 to $1,000.
Trustee Andrew Stein and others pointed out the village’s two Metra stations do not have service on the weekends.
“We’re not here to solve the immigration issues that face the United States. We are here to provide for the public health, safety and welfare of those who are in Buffalo Grove and visiting Buffalo Grove,” Stein said.
The meeting was not without dissent.
A Northbrook resident who works with an immigration advocacy group called the ordinance 100% national origin discrimination.
Woodstock, Joliet, Wilmington, Hinsdale, and North Chicago also passed ordinances Tuesday night.
North Chicago Mayor Leon Rockingham Jr. told FOX-32 the city unanimously passed bus ordinance Tuesday night. Effective immediately, it bans arrivals between 1 and 5 a.m., and the city will issue fines of $1,000 and $5,000 for failure to give 72 hours notice.
