CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A busy stretch of Chicago Avenue will soon get a VIP lane for Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) buses.

The city's namesake street will likely be a little more congested for drivers around Halsted Avenue, as Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) crews work to give the No. 66 bus a red, bus-only lane, with the goal of improving public transit travel time.

Officials said the bus-only lane builds on previous transit projects and will create a "nearly continuous, 3.9-mile bus lane from Grand to Ashland Avenues and from Milwaukee to Michigan Avenues."

CDOT will implement this new lane between Sangamon and Larrabee Streets.

With this addition, the CTA said 40% of the No. 66 Chicago Avenue route will feature a bus-only lane.

"The 66 Chicago Avenue route is one of our most frequent and most heavily utilized, providing roughly 17,000 rides on an average weekday, and our ability to efficiently move riders along that corridor is critical to connecting communities on the east and west sides of the city," said CTA President Dorval Carter, Jr.
